What families in Tennessee should know
Here's something worth knowing before you go looking for help in Tennessee: when the state created its original disability voucher program back in 2015 (the Individualized Education Account, or IEA), dyslexia was specifically left off the list of qualifying disabilities, as part of a political compromise to get the bill passed at all. Families also have to waive their child's federal IDEA rights and protections to use it. It's a real program, but it wasn't built with dyslexia in mind, and using it comes with a genuine tradeoff.
The good news is that Tennessee just created something broader: the Education Freedom Scholarship Act, launching in the 2025-26 school year, offers about $7,300 a year to any Tennessee K-12 student attending private school, regardless of disability status. It's tuition-focused rather than built for outside tutoring, and it requires enrolling in a private school to use, but it doesn't carry the same dyslexia exclusion or IDEA waiver that the older IEA program does.

Tutor and therapist pathways
Tennessee has no separate state-issued "dyslexia therapist" credential. Private tutors need no state license to operate. The national CALT, Barton, and Wilson certifications remain the practical standard here as elsewhere.
