What families in Ohio should know
Ohio has one of the more thorough, multi-layered dyslexia laws in the country. Since 2021, every kindergartner gets screened for dyslexia, at-risk students move through a tiered system of increasingly intensive help, and the state legally defines a "dyslexia specialist" as someone who's met the International Dyslexia Association's Level II Knowledge and Practice Standards — a real, specific bar, not a vague requirement.
Ohio also runs EdChoice, one of the country's larger private-school voucher programs, which expanded to cover most Ohio families in the state's 2023 budget. It's built primarily around private-school tuition rather than outside tutoring, so if your child is staying in their current school and just needs a tutor, EdChoice likely won't directly fund that — but it's worth knowing about if a school switch is ever on the table.

Tutor and therapist pathways
Ohio Revised Code § 3319.077 requires K-3 teachers, administrators, and special educators (grades 4-12) to complete 18 hours of dyslexia-focused professional development, on a staggered timeline that completed by the 2025-26 school year. Separately, Ohio law (HB157) defines a "dyslexia specialist" as someone trained to the IDA's Level II Knowledge and Practice Standards — a real, legally recognized title, though it's aimed at school-based specialists rather than independent private tutors. Private tutors need no state license to operate; the national CALT, Barton, and Wilson certifications remain the practical standard.
