What families in New Jersey should know
New Jersey's new literacy law, effective with the 2025-2026 school year, requires every K-3 student to be screened for reading difficulty at least twice a year, with written results sent home to parents within 30 days. The state also created a working group on student literacy that includes someone with direct expertise in dyslexia — a small but meaningful detail that puts a dyslexia-informed voice directly in the room when policy gets made.
New Jersey has no ESA or voucher program, so none of this translates into money a family can use for a private tutor. It's also worth knowing that even though New Jersey has formally adopted the IDA's definition of dyslexia into state code, that doesn't change how a child gets classified for special education services — that still runs through the federal "Specific Learning Disability" category, and any New Jersey-specific dyslexia programming has to be funded with the state's own money, not federal special-education dollars.

Tutor and therapist pathways
New Jersey requires K-3 general education teachers and special education teachers to complete at least two hours of annual professional development on dyslexia and other reading disabilities, and has adopted the IDA definition of dyslexia into state education code. There's no separate "dyslexia therapist" license. Private tutors need no state credential to operate; the national CALT, Barton, and Wilson standards apply.
