What families in Mississippi should know
Mississippi has something no other state in this directory has: a scholarship built exclusively for students with dyslexia, called the Mississippi Dyslexia Therapy Scholarship for Students with Dyslexia Program. It pays for a student to attend a public school outside their assigned district, or a private school, specifically to receive dyslexia therapy from a trained specialist — no other state has a program this narrowly targeted.
Mississippi also runs a broader special-needs ESA (up to about $8,007 a year), but until recently it required an active IEP, which many dyslexic students don't have since dyslexia doesn't always qualify a child for special education services. A 2025 bill (HB 1163) proposed opening the ESA specifically to dyslexia-diagnosed students without an IEP — a sign of real, active momentum in the legislature toward making dyslexia support easier to access here, even if it hasn't fully resolved yet.

Tutor and therapist pathways
Mississippi law requires "dyslexia therapists" working in schools that accept the state's Dyslexia Therapy Scholarship to meet specific certification requirements, making Mississippi one of the few states with a legally defined "dyslexia therapist" role tied directly to its funding program. Independent private tutors outside that scholarship system need no state license; the national CALT, Barton, and Wilson certifications remain the broader standard.
