What families in Maryland should know
Here's a fun fact: the International Dyslexia Association, the organization behind the credentialing standards you'll see referenced throughout this directory, is headquartered right in Pikesville, Maryland. Despite that, Maryland's own state-level funding for dyslexia support is thin.
Maryland's BOOST program is a small, income-restricted voucher — just $9 million budgeted for the whole state in 2025-26, covering roughly 3,000 students, less than 1% of what Maryland spends on K-12 education overall. It's also built for private-school tuition, not outside tutoring, and priority goes to students who already have a BOOST award and their siblings, which makes it hard for a new family to break in. If you're staying in your current school and just need a tutor, BOOST realistically won't help.

Tutor and therapist pathways
Maryland has no dedicated state "dyslexia therapist" credential. Private tutors need no state license to operate. Given that IDA's national headquarters is based in Maryland, the state has an unusually strong concentration of CALT/CALP-certified practitioners and IDA-accredited training programs relative to its size — worth mentioning to reassure Maryland parents that credentialed help is genuinely close by, even without a formal state program.
