Dyslexia Tutors in Maine

Local provider listings plus state-specific guidance for families seeking reading support.

What families in Maine should know

Maine created an official "dyslexia coordinator" position within its Department of Education back in 2015 — a single point person whose job includes helping school districts choose good screening tools and pushing statewide guidance forward. Maine also requires every school district to screen K-2 students flagged by a teacher for reading difficulty, and even reimburses districts up to $4,500 toward the cost of a quality screening tool.

None of that translates into money for a family, though. Maine has no ESA or voucher program, and being a large, rural state with a small population means dyslexia specialists are genuinely thin outside the Portland and Bangor areas — part of why the Children's Dyslexia Centers program (in your directory) matters so much here.

Tutor and therapist pathways

Maine's dyslexia screening statute (Title 20-A, § 4710-B) established a dyslexia coordinator position and requires teacher training in dyslexia awareness and evidence-based screening. There's no separate "dyslexia therapist" credential. Private tutors need no state license to operate; the national CALT, Barton, and Wilson standards remain the practical benchmark.
