Dyslexia Tutors in Florida

Local provider listings plus state-specific guidance for families seeking reading support.

What families in Florida should know

Florida runs the single biggest school-choice funding program in the entire country — about $4.3 billion a year, more than any other state. Unlike a lot of ESA programs, Florida's law actually names dyslexia specifically as a qualifying condition, and there's even a smaller, dyslexia-focused fund (the New Worlds Scholarship) built just for K-5 kids who are behind in reading.

But bigger hasn't meant smoother. In February 2026, a group of Florida private schools sued Step Up For Students — the nonprofit that manages most of this money — saying payments had been delayed anywhere from 90 days to over two years, with some schools taking out loans just to make payroll while they waited to get paid. State audits backed up parts of the complaint. If you're a Florida parent, the money is almost certainly there for you — you should just budget for a slower turnaround than the state promises, especially around reimbursements.

Tutor and therapist pathways

Florida requires teachers renewing certain certificates (Elementary Education, Primary Education, Reading, ESE, and several others, for certificates dated July 1, 2020 or later) to complete 2 college credits or 40 in-service points specifically in dyslexia-aligned reading instruction — this is a mandatory renewal requirement, not optional professional development. Florida also offers a broader K-12 Reading Endorsement (5 competencies, IDA-aligned, developed with the Florida Center for Reading Research) that's the closest thing to a specialist credential. There's no separate "dyslexia therapist" license, and private tutors need no state license to operate.
